Your favorite time of year is here! 👻🦇
It’s cozy, it’s spooky, it’s mysterious…
I’m sure you already have tons of seasonal tradition. BUT, in case you wanted some more…here are 13 more ideas for embracing the energy of spooky season!
Here are 13 Easy Ideas for Celebrating Samhain (aka Halloween).
Oh, by the way…If you need a refresher on what the heck Samhain even is & why it matters, read THIS POST first. 🐈⬛
1. Create an Altar for Your Loved Ones

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TRADITION YOU’VE PROBABLY NEVER TRIED.
Practiced all around the world during this time of year, this practice not only keeps the memories of your loved ones alive, you also can heal old childhood wounds by honoring your imperfect ancestors with deep love.
(By the way, this is super healing as shadow work too…accepting the imperfection in others allows you to accept imperfections within yourself)
Put photos of your relatives in frames, light a few candles, and remember the beautiful things about each person.
I wrote an entire post on how my family does it. You can read it here ⬇️

2. Play With Divination with Tarot or Oracle Cards

YOU DON’T HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO START A PRACTICE LIKE THIS!
Samhain is known worldwide as the season when the veil between our realm and the Spirit realm is the thinnest. There has never been a better time to practice reading with tarot and oracle cards, even if it’s your first time!
Take advantage of this energy by sitting with a deck of cards. Who knows what gems of wisdom will present themselves to you! You might be surprised at how much insight you can draw out.
Pro Tip: Before working with a new deck, introduce yourself and hold the deck in your hands while sitting in silence. Then, ask the deck a few questions. How can we work best together? What type of energy should I bring to this reading today?
3. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall (A Ritual)

Let’s dive into the deep, dark work of Samhain…and Scorpio season in general.
Mirror rituals can be deeply powerful… and deeply uncomfortable. It’s crazy to think that we look at ourselves way less than the rest of our friends and family do.
Place a mirror in front of you, look deeply into your own eyes, and sit with the awkwardness of it all. When you’re done, reflect on what came up for you. What did you see? Journal about it if you want.
4. Make an Outdoor Offering to Wandering Spirits

THIS PRACTICE DATES ALL THE WAY BACK TO ANCIENT TIMES.
Your ancestors probably believed in Nature Spirits.
People commonly left food and drink offerings outside of village boundaries during Samhain to appease wandering spirits and faeries. Make an offering for any mysterious guests around your house by offering some tea or fruit on a plate outdoors.
Remember: You can also speak words of protection at the boundaries of your home. Just because you’re offering food doesn’t mean your offering entrance into your property.
5. Create a Samhain Simmer Pot

YOUR SENSE OF SMELL IS A POWERFUL CONNECTION TO YOUR PERSONAL MAGIC.
Fill a pot with water, apples, oranges, cloves, cinnamon, rosemary and bay leaves. Think about what each item feels like to you as you add it to the pot.
Do the apples signify sweetness?
Does cinnamon give the powers of warmth?
There are no wrong answers!
6. Bake Soul Cakes

THE OG FORM OF TRICK-OR-TREATING!
Scholars believed the modern day Halloween tradition actually comes from an ancient British tradition.
To raise funds during the cold of winter, people used to bake Soul Cakes and sell them door to door in exchange for prayers for deceased ancestors. Bake your own soul cakes and exchange them with friends in family in exchange for a story or memory about a loved one who is no longer living.

7. Make Homemade Apple Cider

Although it takes time, making homemade apple cider is insanely easy and incredibly delicious.
Add 10-12 cored/seeded apples, 4-5 cinnamon sticks, a spoonful of whole cloves, and some peeled tangerines into a large pot. Add enough water to cover everything by a few inches and simmer for 2 hours. Smash everything up with a potato masher then simmer another hour or so. Strain out your cider then stir in brown sugar to taste, about 1/2 cup or so.
You will not regret making this!
8. Take a Nature Walk

TIME FOR A NATURE WALK! GRAB A SMALL BASKET AND A SCARF!
How do the trees look around you? What living creatures can you see? Collect any beautiful fallen leaves, acorns, sticks, or rocks that you encounter.
When you get home, display them on your seasonal altar, your dresser, or somewhere prominent in your home.
9. Plan a Gratitude Ritual

WHERE YOUR INTENTION GOES, ENERGY FLOWS.
Take the time to actively think about all of the blessings in your life. What do you already have that seemed like a dream before?
Take a moment to reflect on how far you’ve come and how your life has gotten more beautiful over the years. There is always something to be grateful for, no matter what your situation is. This is a great ritual to involve kids in!
10. Have a Family Movie Night

GRAB THE SNACKS AND BLANKETS!
You can never go wrong with a movie night, am I right? Samhain and Halloween are both on 10/31, and the list of seasonal movies is literally endless, but I created a list of the 13 coziest fall movies that you could consider choosing for your movie night. Don’t forget the popcorn and warm beverage (like the cider from above)!

11. Have a Silent Supper

Although Samhain falls in Autumn, it can sometimes embody the cold, dark energy of deep Winter.
Unlike the lightness of Spring and Summer holidays, Samhain has a certain heaviness to it. Embrace the quiet of Samhain by planning a silent supper, no screens or phones allowed. Slowly eat your meal and consider what this season means to you. You can even set an extra place setting for your deceased loved ones. Serve them a plate of food too and imagine that you are convening with their energy.
12. Tell Ancestral Stories Around a Bonfire

SAMHAIN HAS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH FIRES ALL AROUND THE WORLD.
Create a small fire (keep an extinguisher nearby), and sit around it with loved ones, telling old stories.
Hearing old life stories, told from the perspective of your loved ones, is literal magic. Sit around the campfire and exchange memories. Remember what your grandpa did that one Christmas eve? Did you hear that story about your Uncle when he was in the navy?
13. Carve or Paint Protection Spells on Pumpkins

Pumpkins are aplenty during Samhain season. Buy some pumpkins – literally any color works – and carve or paint sigils and other protective blessings on them. If you aren’t familiar with sigils, here are some ideas to get you started. Remember this time of year, your ancestors believed the Spirits were wandering amongst us…it can’t hurt to have a little energetic protection around your home!
